Ace Your Tests: Think Like a Scientist!

Read the text and answer the true/false statements:

Paragraph A

Most students admit that they are not very good at taking tests. And when it comes to preparing for a big test, like a final exam or an important university entrance test, many don't know where to start.

Paragraph B

The answer is simple: you can use the same methods as scientists in the lab! Students and scientists have similar goals: they want to understand something better. But while scientists study things in the natural world, students study books, lectures, and so on. In the lab, a scientist might do an experiment to test a new idea. A student can't do this, but they can try out new ways of studying. For example, they can try explaining a complicated concept to a friend. If their friend understands, then they probably understand too. Or they can draw a picture of the material they need to memorize. Pictures can help you remember things more easily.

So if you're getting ready for a big test, think like a scientist! Experiment with different ways of studying. You might discover some new methods that work really well for you.

PART A

OK, everyone. Pass your papers forward," the teacher said. I felt a wave of stress and anxiety as I watched my paper move to the front of the room.I knew that I had made mistakes on the test. But now I was too anxious to think about what I had done wrong. I was only thinking about how bad my grade was going to be. I was so anxious that I couldn't concentrate on anything else. I was worried about everything - my homework, my friends, even what I was going to have for lunch.

PART B

I didn't sleep well that night. I was too anxious about my test score. The next morning, I felt terrible. I was tired, and my stomach hurt. I told my mom that I was sick and that I didn't want to go to school. She told me that I was just anxious about my test and that I needed to relax.

PART C

When I got to school, I went to talk to my teacher. She could see how anxious I was. She told me not to worry and that I was doing well in her class. I felt a little better, but I was still really anxious.
